California Boosts Recycling With $20 Million In Grants

The California Department of Conservation will be allocating twenty grants totaling $20 million to various recycling projects across the state. The grants are being taken from unclaimed money that is charged when a consumer purchases drinks in plastic, glass and aluminum containers. When many containers are thrown away, the refund value deposits charged quickly add up and this is a great way of putting the funds to good use.

California already has one of the best recycling infrastructures in the nation, n the first half of 2008, California’s recycling rate was 76 per cent! The purpose of the grants is to help Californian’s improve the process of collecting recyclable products and to provide cleaner materials for recycling.

As an added benefit to the reduction of waste, the grants will also help create around 2,000 new green jobs for the state. Some of the recipients are matching the Department of Conservation’s grants with their own money. Some of the winners include REPSCO, Inc., CR&R Inc. and Peninsula Plastics Recycling.
