First U.S. Offshore Wind Farm Set For 2012

An offshore wind farm might not be too far off in the future. Delaware will start the trend with the first facility planned to be finished in 2012! The wind turbines will number from somewhere between 60 and 200 and will be based approximately one half mile apart.

The wind park would be around 12 miles off the Delaware shore. The distance will make the wind farm barely visible from shore and hopefully be far enough out of the way of the flying zones to decrease any danger to the birds.

With the costs of electricity constantly rising and supply often coming short of demand, wind generated electricity is the perfect solution. While fuel prices sky rocket, wind is free and will create a stable price. It is expected to produce as much electricity as 110,000 householdsĀ  consume.

Massachusetts’ also has a wind farm in the works that was planned to be in place by 2011. But, the state still faces many legal and regulatory hurdles to get approval.
