LEDs Being Tested For Greener Street Lights

We all know that one of the most effective ways of becoming more green is by finding ways to what we do in more energy efficient ways.

Over the next 6 to 12 months several communities in New Jersey will be testing LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps for some of their street lights. The LED street lights were installed free of charge to the communities by The Public Service Electric and Gas Company of Newark, New Jersey.

The Light Emitting Diode street lights provide illumination quality equal to or surpassing traditional street lights, but they are more energy efficient. The purpose of the test is to see just how much more efficient the LED street lamps will be and how well they will hold up under different weather conditions. According to the manufacturer these LED lamps will lower energy consumption by at least 70%.

Other cities and localities have also participated in similar studies. Ann Arbor, Michigan, for example, announced this past October of its plans for the conversion of all the cities downtown area street lights to LEDs. The project is expected to be completed sometime late in 2009 and will mark Ann Arbor as the nations first city to light its downtown with this technology.
