New Jersey Senator Wants Windmills On Piers

Jeff Van Drew, a state senator from New Jersey wants to add windmills to the Jersey shore. The senator is pushing to get the state regulations changed to allow energy generating windmills to be constructed on amusement parks. “Every time we put a windmill in, or a solar panel field, we’re relying on Mideast oil that much less,” he said.

He has introduced the legislation that would drastically change regulations that prohibit the building of energy facilities within 500 feet of the high tide line. Van Drew said that these restrictions are old and outdated and that easing up on the rules on eco friendly sources of energy only makes sense.

Van Drew’s idea already has support from some of the environmental groups. He also has the support of Atlantic City’s Steel Pier president who is already lobbying for approval to construct five windmills that will be used to provide power for all the attractions on the pier.
