New York Makes It Illegal to Air Condition The Streets!

Earlier this month New York city mayor Michael Bloomberg signed a new law into effect that had never been heard of before! It’s now illegal for anyone in New York to air condition the outdoors!

Many business owners prop open the doors of their air conditioned stores to lure customers in off the hot streets. This trick gets over heated shoppers to come in out of the heat in the hopes that they’ll find something and make a purchase!

At the same time this habit of cooling the hot city streets is wasting huge amounts of electricity each day. It’s estimated that this practice attributes to as much as 25% of the energy that the cities air conditioners use during each summer season.

Although first time offenders will simply be issued a warning, the new law will impose fines for repeat offenders from $200 to $400. New York is just one of many cities that struggle to keep up with the high demand of energy and this law might stop many from using more than they need.

While this might be the first of it’s kind, many other cities around the country might follow suit. If New York’s results are lower energy consumption, lower energy prices and fewer blackouts, it might become a much needed wide spread law!
