PG&E Signs Contract For 830 MegaWatts Of Solar Power

Pacific Gas and Electric has contracted for delivery of 500 MW of solar power from subsidiaries of Abengoa Solar and NextEra Energy Resources. The agreements are part of several solar deals that were recently signed by the California utility with independent developers for a total of 830 MW.

The Genesis Solar Energy Project proposed by NextEra consists of two units of 125 MW each that will be located on a site that is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Riverside County. The project is expected to come online in two separate phases, the first unit in 2013 and the second in 2014.

The project will be delivering over 600 gigawatt hours of energy each year. That is enough to service the needs of around 90,000 homes. “These projects will serve the critical energy needs of our customers without creating heat-trapping gases that harm our environment,” said Fong Wan, senior vice president for energy procurement at PG&E. “Projects like these are reinforcing the demonstrated leadership of PG&E and California in clean solar technology.”
