Robins Air Force Base Unveils New Solar Technology

Robins Air Force Base has been considered a pioneer in the testing of technologies in alternative energy for a long time. And, recently they installed a new solar panel which has been the source of much discussion. The solar panel resembles a large drive in movie screen.

At peak hours the solar panel generates 25 kilowatts of electricity and cost around $434,000 to build. The funding was made possible by a congressional funding that is allocated for renewable energy sources. The main thing that sets this solar panel apart from others is the sensors that were used.

The sensor technology can actually automatically track the sun. The concentrated photovoltaic array can amplify the power of the sun from 500 to 1,000 times. The panel makes use of magnifying glasses and it can trap as much as 38 percent of the suns light.

The panels have an estimated life of at least 25 years. As of now, the energy that is generated by the solar panels will be used by the bases power grid. You can read more about this revolutionary technology at the AlternativeEnergy.com website.
