Uk Is World Leader In Wind Farm Electricity
The UK just took first place as the world leader in generating electricity through the use of offshore wind farms. Just off the coast of Skegness, Lincolnshire is their newest wind farm that pushed them into the number one spot.
Centrica built the new farm which is projected to generate enough electricity to power 130,000 houses. This raises the total homes in the UK that will be powered with wind to 300,000 for a total of around 590 megawatts of energy.
Mike O’Brien, with the Department of Energy and Climate Change said, “There are already five more offshore windfarms under construction that will add another 939MW by the end of 2009″.
Although, the news is certainly good for the UK and good for the environment, there is a downside. Most of the wind turbines purchased for the offshore farms are being manufactured else where. The news would be even better if the UK was benefiting from the jobs that are required to manufacture the turbines.
