Vestas Gets Tehachapi Wind Order
Vestas recently received a 570 megawatt order that includes 190 of their V90 3 MW turbines that will be used for Terra-Gen’s Alta Wind Energy Center. The new center will be located near Tahachapi, California. The order was placed by some of the subsidiaries of Alta Wind Holdings LLC, a subsidiary that is wholly owned by Terra-Gen Power.
The purchase is the largest order for a single site that Vestas has ever received. The contract will include the delivery, the commissioning and a five year service and maintenance agreement. Delivery of the turbines is set for late this year with the first 50 being commissioned and the remainder being online during the first half of 2011.
Manufacturing operations in Colorado will be producing the components. All of the turbine blades will be produced at the company’s factory in Windsor, Colorado. A large majority of the towers for these turbines will be manufactured at their new tower factory in Pueblo, Colorado.
“The entire Vestas team looks forward to helping Terra-Gen bring this exceptional project to reality. When completed, it will be the largest wind farm we will have supplied turbines to in our 31-year history as well as the biggest in California,” says Martha Wyrsch, President of Vestas Americas. “Terra-Gen has selected an excellent turbine and service package. We will work closely with their financiers and customers to make this project successful.”
The new Alta wind Energy Center will be supported through a 1,550 megawatt power purchase agreement to sell the renewable energy through Southern California Edison. This latest order makes the eighth deal for Vesta in North America in 2010. Vestas orders have totaled 1,336 megawatts for 2010 and includes four types of turbines.
