Wind Turbines That Can Predict Wind Behavior

The first successful test ever completed on a wind turbine with a laser based anemometer that was built into the spinner has been done by Riso DTU. The anemometer is used to increase the generation of electricity. The results of the test have shown that this type of system can predict thw direction of the wind, wind gusts and wind turbulence.

It’s estimated that wind turbines of the future will be able to increase the production of energy. The laser system, called LIDAR will even be able to help meet the large loads of demand. This new Danish technology basically means that the turbines can see the wind coming before it even reaches the blades.

The new technology is expected to increase the production of energy by as much as 5 percent mainly because turbines will be able to utilize longer blades. The blades will be more reliable because they’ll be better able to cope with irregularities in the wind.
